I am a clinical psychologist who is skilled at assisting individuals and couples with working through the barriers and struggles that prevent them from fully enjoying life. My approach is compassionate, non-judgmental, and accepting, while creating a safe therapeutic environment that fosters healing and recovery. I have training and experience in helping individuals and couples overcome stress, trauma, and tragedy, including addressing the problems that often accompany trauma (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia, fears, substance abuse, and intimacy and attachment problems). I will help with strengthening your capacity to cope and assist you to move beyond suffering, so that you may thrive.
I will work with you to identify treatment goals and will assist you in achieving these goals. I have training and experience in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of a variety of clinical and cognitive assessments that inform diagnoses and treatment planning. I provide clinical services that incorporate multiple evidence-informed therapies and techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing (MI), emotion focused therapy (EFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and solution-focused therapy, among others. I have published and presented research related to trauma, addiction, intimacy, attachment, ethics, and positive psychology, among other areas. I have also lectured on these topics.
I am originally from Twillingate, Newfoundland and completed my undergraduate and masters degrees at Memorial University in St. John's. I completed my doctoral studies at Brock University and supplemented this with additional clinical training at the Adler Graduate Professional School in Toronto. My wife, Heather, and I moved to Nova Scotia in 2015 when I accepted a position with the Operational Trauma and Stress Support Centre at Canadian Forces Health Services Center (Atlantic) at CFB Halifax. I have previously worked in clinical, research, and leadership roles with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), and the Ontario Correctional Institute.
