Have you ever had a client say they’re afraid to eat? Have you ever noticed a change in a client’s weight or body shape after time away? Or have you heard a client insist that they can’t have an eating disorder because they “eat”? Eating disorders are frequently identified by clinicians as an area of limited confidence or competence. This uncertainty can create blind spots or leave clinicians unsure of how to respond when eating or body image concerns arise unexpectedly. Yet these concerns are common across all populations and clinical presentations. Increasing awareness of how eating disorders present – and how to respond appropriately – can significantly enhance clinician confidence and client
care.

Dr. Emily Orr, Ph.D., R. Psych. is a registered psychologist with training and experience in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders and related mental health concerns. Dr. Orr provides evidence-based psychological services and regularly works with individuals presenting with complex eating-related and co-occurring mental health difficulties.

- Provide an overview of current feeding and eating disorders, including Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
- Explore common and less obvious ways eating disorders may present in clients who have not previously identified these concerns
- Discuss why eating and body image considerations are relevant across treatment contexts
- Review key clinical considerations when referring clients
- Share referral sources specific to the Atlantic Provinces
